Oh yes, Sig, these instruments came into vogue during the 70's and 80's. Basically, they are all financial instrument or bond derivatives. I used to design some tranches based around leases. I was also fiddling with these things in connection with mortgages. Anytime you can split cash flows in a fixed income security you can create a variety derivatives with differing risk characteristics. I don't know about these things trading on the NYSE. The ones I dealt with were private placements.
