Solon,
Another particularly Southern past-time requiring little sense. I refer to the timeless tradition of 'hogging'. I am unsure where the name comes from since it involves catfish...but 'hogging' it is.
This involves walking steams, cricks, bayous and such and reaching under boulders and stones in the water and trying to grab catfish by a lip or gill and snatching them out. I am told that the odds of grabbing a snake are almost nonexistent. My mind may understand 'almost' but my body didn't like the odds everytime that I tried hogging. When I reach under a rock and something moves, I am going to help by leaving as fast as I can. Once, when a very large fish boiled out from under a rock, I reached planing speed and even managed to skip like a stone for about 4 skips. There are much better ways of getting a catfish dinner.
