PREVIEW OF NEXT YEARS MID-EAST NEWS -- TODAY By Dr. Steven Plaut
The headlines are filled with the news that Yassir will be announcing the erection of his "Palestinian State" this May, with Jerusalem
as its Capital. Israeli politicans of all stripes, incl. Netanyahu, Barak, Ezer Weitzman, etc. are warning the PLO of the horrific
consequences if they go ahead with this, thinly threatening force.
Now for those of you with a busy schedule and little time for newspapers, let me save you some time and tell you now far in
advance exactly what is going to happen over the next year or so:
On May 4, 99 Arafat will announce the creation of the new state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. It will be immediately
recognized by every country on earth except Micronesia and the US, and the US will recognize it about 6 months or so after
everyone else. All these countries will erect "embassies" to Palestine in East Jerusalem. Palestine will begin a rapid program of
armaments procurement and will invite Iraqi and Iranian soldiers in (quietly) to renforce the National Palestine Liberation Army. The
PLO Presidency will move to Orient House in east Jerusalem. After a few months, the army of Palestine will begin shelling Israeli
neighborhoods and towns, and do everything it can to force Israel into an all-out war - where all the Arab states rush to the defense
of Palestine-the-victim-of-Israeli-aggression. Meanwhile, bands of Israeli Arabs (from within the Green Line) will be detonating bombs
and mines.
And what, you ask, will the Israeli government be doing while all this is going on? Especially after all the blood-curdling threats and
warnings this week from the Israeli politicians about oy-vavoy what will happen to the Palestinians if they declare a state? Well, why
keep you in suspense? The answer is that they will do absolutely nothing. They will sit back and let it happen. The Left, including
most of the Labor Party, will applaud it and Shimon Peres and his fellow travelers will be on the platform in Ramallah to applaud
Arafat's declaration of statehood. The Israeli army will do absolutely nothing. There will be no sanctions. Israeli leaders may grumble
a bit. But then they will calm down, convincing themselves that now that the Palestinians really have their own country they will no
doubt live in peace and the whole world will applaud Israel for being so nice and insist on befriending the Jews, and they will believe
this right up to the third week of the coming all-out Arab-Israeli war.
Now is all that what HAS to happen? Of course not, it is just what WILL happen. Sure you will hear all sorts of snorts about how
Israel has no options and no choice but to agree to all this. Which is of course nonsense.
What could Israel do (even though she will not do it)? Some or all of the following:
The day Arafat announces his state (or even beforehand - better yet) - 1. Buldoze Orient House and every other structure serving the
PLO in Jerusalem. 2. Arrest any member of the PLO or any other PLO surrogate group who enters the Green Line, esp to
Jerusalem. 3. Completely block off the entrance and exit into the PLO zones, preventing any movement of goods or people.
Especially, no Palestinians can use Israeli airports or seaports or leave for Jordan or Egypt. ESPECIALLY no leaders of the PLO or
its sister groups. 4. Absolutely no movement of goods or people into Israel from the PLO zones. No Palestinians at all allowed to
enter Israel to work. Absolutely no movement of petroleum or materials into "Palestine". (let us see how they erect an army without
gasoline) 5. Shut off all electricity and water to the PLO zones. 6. Jam all PLO broadcasts. Allow no newspeople into the PLO
zones. 7. Send in hit teams to assassinate leaders and members of terrorist organizations in "Palestine". 8. Annex all remaining
parts of West Bank and Gaza in Israeli hands (recall these are almost empty areas with almost no Arab populations). 9. Jail Ahmad
Tibi and any other Israeli Arab openly identifying with the state of "Palestine". 10. Make flying the Palestinian flag in Israeli territory a
felony. 11. Deny access to the Temple Mount to residents of the "State of Palestine". 12. Seize all access points and checkpoints
into Palestine and permit no movement of people. 13. Do not lift any of these sanctions until AFTER Arafat and the PLO unilaterally
cancel their declaration of statehood, declare unambiguously that they recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel, and revoke and
replace the PLO's National Covenant.
That is what Israel COULD do. But will not. |
