TELE COMMUNICATIONS INC and AT&T CORP are trying to persuade major cable-TV companies to join them in offering local phone service over cable-TV lines, executives familiar with the matter say, the Wall Street Journal reported. AT&T and TCI are putting together what they hope will be a compelling business model that will include offering both affiliated and nonaffiliated cable operators whatever assistance they may need to make a go of phone service in their territories, including technical, marketing and even financial support. In exchange, AT&T and TCI are expected to push for lengthy strategic commitments -- possibly 10 to 15 years in duration -- to provide phone service, likely co-branded, over existing cable lines.
