The 'friend' was trying to get Tripp to commit a crime.

There's a discontinuity in that Monica was already servicing Clinton.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tripp had exercised some ulterior motive.
Clinton still made the moves and exercised poor judgment, making him
an easy target for blackmail.
