True packet connections do not require a full time over the air connection like the old modems of the past. They only connect up (very fast) when you have something to send or recieve.

If for instance you were looking at SI, only when you hit next would you connect, send 10 bytes or so, then you may time out and shut down while the SI server is looking for the article, then 10 seconds later it would hook back up when the Si server starts sending you data. so you would only use a few seconds of air time for a transaction that looks to you like a minute or two.

All the future packet connections will be like this, thus saving as much air time as possible.
