What's going on with MSFT and AAPL is a long old game of accomodation. Certainly AAPL needs the validation of MSFT support.

But MSFT also needs:

1) AAPL's tradition/cadre of innovative users. To wit Internet Explorer for the MacOS to foil Netscape.

2) New ideas to copy and sell. Otherwise, why should anyone buy Win '97? (Quick, can anyone name any core technology that originated at MSFT?)

3) More money. MSFT makes a whole s--tload of it selling Mac apps. At 40x earnings, they're not anxious to forego any revenue streams.

4) An alternativeOS platform with market share to keep the Justice Dept. from declaring MSFT a monopoly (Quicker, can anyone think of a company that better fits the definition?)

Particularly if the JD breaks MSFT into OS and Applications.
