If history is any guide, your "safer alternative" scenario is wrong. Since 1992 there has been only one brief period (early 1997) that CSCO has not consistently outperformed SPY. tscn.com With a 1200% gain posted by CSCO, compared to 200% gain by SPY, CSCO could well afford a transient 35% haircut and still come out well ahead of SPY. Of course this presumes one is in it for the long term. BTW, I'm in CSCO since 1992. Tulvio
