UK - Sexuality 'Not A Factor For Viagra'

(PA News) Viagra will be prescribed to patients regardless of their sexuality when it becomes available on the National Health Service, the Government has pledged.

But prescriptions would be issued only to combat medical conditions and the use of Viagra as a recreational drug, whether by homosexuals or heterosexuals, would not be permitted, it said.

The anti-impotence treatment, which has created massive interest worldwide, is now available in Britain but only on private prescription.

The Department of Health is currently drawing up guidelines as to who should receive the drug on the NHS, amid fears its potential popularity could cost taxpayers millions.

A department spokeswoman said that while the guidelines had not yet been finalised, she could confirm that a patient's sexuality was not one of the factors that would be considered.

She said: "All prescriptions and treatments are issued on the basis of clinical need only. Sexuality is not an issue in determining clinical need."

But there would be safeguards, she added: "Ministers are determined that Viagra will not be used as a recreational drug at the NHS's expense. That applies both to heterosexual and homosexual men.

"There will be clear guidance issued to the NHS about this and other issues relating to Viagra."
