Sad thing was the car wasn't stolen and could have been traced. We had the make, model, color, year and 4 of the 6 numbers on the plate with the fifth number narrowed down to either a 3 or an 8. Asked the police if they could trace the car and was told they could but it would be a lot of trouble. It was a group from a small town 30 miles away. They got one or two motorcycles a night for almost two years before being caught.
