I have seen some of this play out in small companies my spouse has worked for (much smaller companies than Ascend) and I think a lot of the board members may tell buddies, because the sales or buys in these cases are not insignificant. Once anyone tells someone the cat is out of the bag, and the broadcasting can get quite large. Some people even post inside info on the net- the problem is you can't tell who really has info and who doesn't. So volume and direction (and especially suspicious options activity) should clue you in- especially relevant on smaller stocks. But we have all seen it happen even with stocks as large as INTC.
