Dog, I am wondering if INTC does not already have its own version of PCI-X. It is a fairly straightforward engineering task. A 64 bit bus at twice the clock rate of the system clock does not seem particularly difficult to design given the design resources of those companies. DELL could also design such a bus. Since they are already designing motherboards for 450 MHZ Xeons, they must have to CAD tools and people in place to do this type of job. The only real advantage for CPQ, HWP, and IBM lies in getting their version of this accepted as a standard by INTC and is as you mention a potential time to market advantage. If INTC does not buy this as the standard or if changes are made to get it accepted, the initial advantage will be lost for the most part. Also, it takes a large amount of time to get a bus through the standards process. The process is both technical and political. I am not particularly concerned about this issue for the reasons I have given above.
