No, the Cougar wasn't stolen. The group had bought the car and the truck they used to haul the bikes at auction. That made it pretty safe for them to travel to and from where they stole the bikes.

Back in those days a search of the plate partial would have brought up 20 vehicles that were possibles. Doubt if there would have been 2 white '67 Z-7ns in that bunch. Wasn't important enough for the work involved, only about $200,000 stolen each year.
