Hard actually to say what happened, as accounts vary widely, but the Gates/Burgoyne story is certainly true. Most I've read indicates that the British surrendered less because they were defeated in a military sense than because they were out of food, low on ammunition, and being continually harassed and sniped at. My family roots are around Saratoga, and some ancestors actually fought there - local lore is obscure and contradictory. Never heard much about Benedict's role; probably, as you suggest, it was erased due to later events.

Great line from Shaw's play on the subject ("The Devil's Disciple"):

Burgoyne's aide: "But what will histoy say?"

Burgoyne: "History, sir, will tell lies, as usual".
