Seem like it rains a lot on weekends? Wet Weekends
The rain in White Plains (New York State, that is) falls mainly on Saturdays, according to a recent analysis. Randall S. Cerveny and Robert C. Balling, Jr., of Arizona State University reviewed weekly climate fluctuations recorded at Sable Island--just east of Nova Scotia and downwind of the U.S. eastern seaboard--from July 1991 to January 1995. They found that concentrations of ozone and carbon monoxide peaked late in the week--a cycle that strongly correlated with observed rainfall patterns. The conclusion? Aerosol pollution probably ensures that coastal areas are wetter on the weekends, making Saturdays 22 percent rainier than Mondays.
