There is also another alternative you should be aware of -- there are companies out there that "pool investor resources" into sort of a consortium so that the small guys can get involved in IPOs.

One such company is Wit Capitol. They offer you the ability to bid on a lot of IPOs at the intial offer price. There is a catch, however. They discourage "flipping" by charging a 5% fee on any principal sold within 30 days of the IPO.
