For those of the mathametical, due a partial differentiation of the formula, and you'll see that the recent volatility of the YEN/CDN/BP has dramtically moved the index. Add the biggest portion GERMANY, and the recent elections. And thus the recent volatility in gold.

Also if you want a slightly bias formula for currencies comparisons to Gold... Use the IMF own formula {since they hold gold}
Not sure if they know how much they do have. {check the date}

Plot SDR versus Gold, and the same for the USD {which is SDR biggest holding} you may be surprised.
