Teligent Point to Multipoint Wireless Coming
NewsBytes, September 25, 1998 / by Ron Gustavson

VIENNA, VIRGINIA, U.S.A., 1998 SEP 25
Teligent, Inc., [NASDAQ:TGNT] should be on
track to offer commercial point to multipoint voice
and data services in Los Angeles by next
Wednesday. The initial service is the first step in
a planned rollout of alternative voice and data
services in fifteen US markets by the end of the
year.

Aimed at small to medium-sized businesses,
Teligent's wireless service can connect twenty to
thirty buildings, using 12" microwave dishes,
which connect to a Teligent Base Station hub,
the company says.

Robert Stewart, Teligent vice president of
communications, told Newsbytes, "We want to
deliver assured bandwidth, at lower cost, to
small and medium-sized businesses. Most small
businesses want T-1 data throughput, or
1.544Mbps. We can deliver this to small
business, using our IP over ATM (Asynchronous
Transfer Mode) network, which provides an
alternative public switched phone network as
well."

Point to multipoint wireless, which operates at
the 24GHz spectrum, is a new technology that
extends the older point to point wireless repeater
service. Stewart notes, "For smaller companies,
we can combine point to point with point to
multipoint."

While T-1 speeds are the most common data
requirement, wireless transmitters are capable of
up to DS-3 (Digital Signal Level 3) speeds, or
44.736Mbps, Newsbytes notes.

Teligent's service will come just about a month
after Winstar Communications [NASDAQ:WCII]
first demonstrated its Wireless ATM service in
the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Regarding Teligent's focus Stewart adds, "Two
thirds of all businesses don't have fiber
connections to the Internet. We can serve these
customers, offering a full range of voice and data
options."
