Dan -
This is technically do-able now. What you are suggesting is a 'virtual desktop', which has been a skunkworks project at MS (for NT) for a while now, and has been possible on Unix for years. But with prices for a stand-alone PC heading to $499 or $399 in the next year, it will probably be cheaper and easier to just add another compute device, since the cost of the PC will be comparable to the cost of the additional monitor.

As far as competitive issues driving this, I don't really see it. Citrix has done reasonably well by continuing to innovate around connectivity standards, and by licensing arrangements with MSFT. They have, of course, ongoing challenges in 'dancing with the bear' but MSFT has not been aggressive in pushing people out of this space.
