Here is some interesting info pertaining to JMAR Semiconductor from the DMEA web page:

MICROELECTRONICS OBSOLESCENCE and Diminishing Manufacturing Sources

Using our Logistics Retrofit Engineering (LRE) process, we develop and produce solutions to obsolescence of microelectronics components. We maintain an organic expertise in microelectronics technologies to assist requesting organizations in the identification and resolution of DMS problems within their identified systems.

OBSOLESCENCE ASSESSMENTS

Our Obsolescence Assessments offer a detailed analysis of the extent of microelectronics technology obsolescence within a specific system. This assessment provides the data for a life cycle evaluation of the
system. The assessment may include a set of solutions which can alleviate the reported obsolescence. The program manager or support specialist can then select from the suggested solutions according to the different technical approaches, cost and programmatic factors.

DMS SOLUTIONS and PROCESS

* Pin-for-pin replacements are exact replacement parts from a source that was not the original manufacturer.

* Substitution is the use of a similar part that is physically different than the obsolete part but is a direct pin for pin replacement.

* A life-of-type buy refers to the purchase of the total quantity of parts estimated to support the remaining service life of the system.

* Repackaging is the use of a modern solid state component that is packaged in the same package type as the obsolete component so that it fits in the same outline as the old part.

* Aftermarket sources purchase end of runs of components being dropped by the original manufacturer.

* As long as the aftermarket companies have the old parts, they are viable sources of supply of the basic component. Then the device is tested and qualified according to the requirements of the original part.

* Emulation is the development of a form-fit-function replacement using modern microcircuit technology.

* The emulation replacement is functionally identical to the old part, is packaged in the same type of package as the old part, and fits in the same outline as the old part.

* Compression is the application of high density modern microelectronics technology to replace one or more obsolete microcircuits at the module level. This approach can replace ten to twenty separate microcircuits with just one new microcircuit on a circuit card assembly that is form-fit-function at the card level.

ADVANCED MICROELECTRONICS

Obsolescence can also be solved by the application of modern microelectronics technologies as discussed previously. But the DMEA is also equipped to help program offices modernize its systems, solve broad-based obsolescence problems, and develop entirely new systems. Using the DMEA's organic microelectronics and systems expertise and capabilities in electronic and physical analysis, test, evaluation, prototyping, and documentation, the DMEA is a ready-source of assistance for development of advanced electronic technology
solutions to reliability, maintainability, and supportability problems in fielded and proposed weapon systems.
