The short interest on LSI as of 9/15/98 was 3,315,068. This was up from 8/14/98 when the short interest was 2,523,317. This is a negligible amount of short sales relative to the amount of shares issued (c. 160,000,000). Apparently the professional short-sellers were scared away the easy money that is usually made on a pre-announcement Possibly the potential of a buyout scared them away.
