Mark, PC Computing (September issue) had an interesting article about the PC of the future. If you read it and believe it you will be frozen in your tracks. You will not buy a new pc until 64 bit processing comes out, fpd price points come down, and Microsoft revamps Win 20xx. Meanwhile, every time you boot up your computer you will be unhappy because you can't do everything you can dream of doing. I can not find a cold, logical reason for upgrading at this time. My home 166/ 2.1gig/ 56k does everything I "logically" need it to do. I am upgrading because it is just plain not "cool" enough. Your questions-- << Do you all see new processors coming out as quickly as they did in the past, and is there a change in processors that looms on the horizon? Merced is delayed. Move to 64 bit could have been something worth waiting for. A PIII anytime soon?>> Last I read, 64 bit architecture would be available for the desktop (at a reasonable price point) in mid-2000. 2 years from now (or 14 years in computer years <G>). <<Does Intel really want to sell a 600 mhtz computer next Feb?>> Who cares? 450 mhz or 650 mhz, both are well beyond our ability to use all of their capability. 650 would be "cooler" than 450 but only to another real geek. <<Ultra ATA 66 might make the disk drive faster. Is there another bus change? Faster memory? Better graphics? Maybe just a huge price drop? >> Are you producing digital content? Editing films, producing animation ? If not, the only real question is price per gig of storage. Summary- <<Still, going back to my question that might make this a useful discussion.>> You want a logical answer? There is absolutely no reason to upgrade your 133 laptop PC. I suspect you know this. Upgrading to the latest and greatest would make you feel good about yourself.
