It almost sounds like the final merger into a common OS is about to happen. Or the merger will involve some major translation modules so that the OSs will be transparent to all who are using them.
Very savvy observation. I think the trend seems to be more the second than the first. The ability to develop applications that don't care where they run has been the 'holy grail' for a long time. That was the premise of Java 'run anywhere' but most agree that interpreters are too slow to ever make the promise come true.

But a strategy which uses object technology, middleware and common APIs to make the underlying OS 'invisible' benefits users of any of the operating systems that play by the rules. All new applications benefit from the cross-platform strategy, and old applications continue to run as before. If CPQ can pull this off it will be a huge win for them and for the industry.
