However, don't underestimate the incumbents desire to be re-elected. If there is enough of a hue and cry from the populace, odds are that one of the Congressional Houses will back down. Even if they don't, we can throw the bums out of the House 2 years later. Considering the reaction they are getting from the current situation, can you imagine the backlash against the Republicans if they were to use this affair to push that extreme agenda? <<It'll be interesting to see the results of Nov. elections.>> A few months ago, the Democrats were predicting that they would actually pick up a few seats in both the House and the Senate. Now they are claiming that anything less than a loss of 20 seats in the House and 5 seats in the Senate would prove a backlash against the Republicans. The problem with watching November's results, is we don't know what they would have been without the scandal, so there's no way to tell what the actual reaction of the public has been.
