President's supporters hope to air ads attacking Republicans

By Ron Fournier, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Clinton's supporters hope to raise up to $5 million for an election-season TV ad campaign that would attack Republicans' handling of impeachment proceedings, a move that could anger cash-starved Democratic leaders.

Though not formally sanctioned by the White House, the effort is part of a broad Clinton strategy to portray the GOP-led Congress as partisan and obsessed with the Monica Lewinsky investigation.

"If this is true, it is disappointing that the president has put his own well being ahead of Democrats facing difficult elections in November. If the White House follows through with this there will be a number of House Democrats that will feel betrayed,'' said Dan Sallick, spokesman for the Democratic National Campaign Committee.

Yup; he'll sacrifice everyone else's career before his own. What a loyal, dedicated, fearless, upstanding guy.
