In MetaStock I use Stoch(5,3,3), Williams %R - I watch midline crosses, not overbought/oversold, DMI, RSI, also TC2000's TSV.

Forward testing = let the software build the best system it can for some length of time , let's say 1/1/96 to 3/1/98. Now test how that system does from 3/1/98 to 9/1/98. If the system still works well in that later period, odds are it'll work well in the future.
