the single reason the USA is so far ahead of the rest of the world in new technologies is simple. They promote a free market competition through technology and companies. The 3g debate is an example of the diferent mentality between Asia/Europe and the America's. It is why in my opinion we are in this meltdown. In the 1980's everyone hailed MITI(ministry of trade in Japan)as some super economic booster. HAHAHA what a joke. In collage we were taught about managed economies, and how The USA laked a MITI. It was the reason we were loosing the battle in the world markets. In retrospect it did the opposite, it created an unbelievable competitive market. In this market the strong survive, and the weak go out of business. Meanwhille in Europe and Asia they purtected their fat, slow, uncompetitive heavy industries. This is why the only leading Tech industry Europe can point at is Comunication. That technology was invented by Americans to. I will let the market place decide the fate of CDMA. I believe its fast rate of adoption, and higher capacity will eventially dwarf GSM's growth. i think CDMA2000 will beat to market, and be backward GSM compatible. Then we will see who wins! Europe can only hide behind ETSI so long to defend one of its few succesfull Tech business's.
