Qualcom is a good buy. Here's why:
-- PCS provider Primeco has launched with CDMA technology and most
people in the industry I know believe the sound quality is well
above TDMA or GSM.
-- While Qcom will make moner on licensing CDMA technology to
Lucent, Nortel, etc. they will make even more on the production
of CDMA handsets.
-- Contrary to the views of most people, NextWave does not help
QCOM. Nextwave paid way too much for their licenses. QCOM will
be well served if Nextwave defaults, so QCOM can focus on what
they do best. I believe Nextwave will default -- capital markets
are not looking highly on them.
-- CDMA is increasingly being accepted internationally. Many
countries do not like having GSM pushed on them and look to the
US for technology standards.
-- Sprint PCS will launch major markets across the country during
the first half of 1997. Many believe that launch delays are due
to problems with the CDMA network. This is not true. Sprint is
simply having trouble acquiring all of the sites they need for
basestations -- this just takes time. They also want to be
sure that they have a large supply of handsets. Since CDMA phones
just went into production, it will take a few months for production
levels to ramp up to where they need to be.

QCOM is underpriced at the moment because people are reading too
much into Sprint's delay. They own the standard for advanced
digital mobile communications, much like Microsoft owns the
operating system market for PCs. This is a long-term, high
growth stock.
