Oops Sorry! Clothing Ad Changed To Calm White House
2.01 p.m. ET (1801 GMT) September 29, 1998
WASHINGTON — Clothing maker Tommy Hilfiger said Tuesday it would alter an advertising campaign after the White House complained about the depiction of an alluring young woman sitting on what appeared to be President Clinton's desk in the Oval Office.

The ad, published recently in Vanity Fair, Glamour and other U.S. magazines, showed the woman wearing a Hilfiger dress remarkably similar to descriptions of the one former White House intern Monica Lewinsky wore during a sexual encounter with Clinton at the White House.

"A legal officer from the White House notified the company by letter of a technical White House policy precluding the use of the White House or its likeness in advertising imagery,'' Hilfiger said in a statement.

"The company will comply with the White House's request and no longer utilize White House imagery in its advertising or in its promotional materials,'' it said.

There is just one problem. The action is too late to stop the ad appearing in some publications in October, the company said.
