Schmitt's laser based systems are for hard disk and wafer surface
measurement and defect detection, which appears to overlap with over
60% of Tencor's business. I started following the company on the
advice of a friend who used to work for a local broker in Portland.
The company is small enough that even though I'm an individual investor,
I was able to talk with management directly and develop my own
opinion of the firm - I suspect that Wall Street is just starting
to look at this company, as evidenced by the volume in the last month.

SMIT is small enough (about 7.5MM sales this year), that it will be
some time before they cause serious harm to TNCR. However, the
technology is definitely in place. I still think TNCR has a good
business. I just believe that a smaller, more undiscovered company
with better technology is going to provide greater rewards to the
investor.

If you're interested, maybe we should start a separate thread for
SMIT.
