The problem with the "doesn't work" number is that NOBODY has a real clear idea of what "doesn't work" means.

To a novice user, "doesn't work" might be because they didn't connect the cables right and needed assistance. Even to a more sophisticated one, printer setup might cause a "failure" (becuase Windows installed an out-of-date driver, for example).

In many cases, the "failure" has to do with setting up dial-up networking and internet support. These can be VERY complex if your selected ISP doesn't provide good quality documenation and/or setup programs.

I found it interesting in that article (I have the hard copy in front of me) that they failed to even capture data about generic Windows 95 problems, which are historically the industry's biggest problem. The causes they cite are only the actual HARDWARE problems which may occur. These are a small perecent of overall problems at HP and elsewhere.

Bottom line is that reliability could be a LOT better. But that survey made the hardware issues appear to be much bigger than they really are.
