I know this was a joke, but I think it makes a reasonable point. Americans get around mostly in their automobiles, which all have cigarette lighters (except my Volvo, which has a 12v power outlet, which looks surprisingly like the jack for a cigarette lighter) with which to recharge telephone batteries. Many people I know never take their cellular phones out of their cars at all.

Perhaps Europeans have demanded longer standby times because they're moving around on public transportation?
