Patrick,

Originally AMD, Cyrix and IDT all had different 3D extensions that they were trying to promote. I believe they came to agreement last year on one standard which I believe is 3DNow because the AMD chips were the closest to silicon. They realised last year that they needed to standardize in order to get some software support before KNI came out.
