Setting the Speed

from america's network dot com

by Annie Lindstrom

When I think of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, I often recall the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. The moral of the story, slow and steady wins the race, hardly seems to apply in today's world. It's easy to envision today's parents telling that story to their children and being laughed out of bedrooms around the world.

Could the Tortoise even dream of winning today? It seems highly unlikely. However, one must remember that in his haste, the Hare, thinking he was so far ahead of the Tortoise, got careless and cocky and ultimately lost focus on his goal -- to win the race. The Tortoise, though the best he could do was plod along, kept his eye on the finish line, and in doing so astonishingly bested the Hare.

What lessons can the DSL industry learn from this fable? Speed is of utmost importance, but speed in and of itself does not win the race. It's critical to make steady progress toward the ultimate goal.
