Clinton's first 2 years where old style liberal Democratic based and it was the wrong direction. A government medical system was the wrong direction. After the '94 election, Clinton dumped that effort as a mistake. I don't see any interest or effort to go down that path again.

As for Social Security and Medicare; it's pretty clear that the Republican's have no interest in taking the so-called and ficticious surplus and us it to pay up the debt to the Social Security mis-Trust Fund. What we have had is an insurance program where the Congress has stolen all the money for the beneficiaries. Now that was wrong to have been done, but that is the past and if the Republican's aren't willing to fix that, then they are in effect trying to destroy the program by leaving it unfunded for the future. They would win me over some if they showed a real commitment to the program and a real interest in fixing it in a responsible way. Like Reagan, their approach seems to be to bankrupt the thing and then say we no longer can afford it and so they get rid of it indirectly. This 80 billion tax cut when we have a huge defecit as long as you don't include money that isn't taxes, but Social Security money, which isn't and never should have been thought of as tax money, is totally irresponsible. You don't give back money taken when the money taken isn't enough to cover what is being spent. It is the wrong direction and it should be fought against. The Dem's are winning points doing just that. The thing is dead dead dead in the Senate because Republican's there know they will be mauled if they pass it.
