Washington Update --

S. 2392 passed the Senate near the end of Monday's session. It almost seemed as if the bill was sneaked through, as I was just off the Senate floor and wasn't even aware it was moving. So much for vigilance. gggg.

A few minor -- but key -- changes were made before the Senate passed the bill, which improved its overall value to those "good Samaritan" companies in the IT community. Still not what we wanted (and deserved, mind you -- no bias here! ggg), but better than it was.

Best case scenario -- the House Rules Committee approves a closed rule and the bill is brought to the floor this Friday. However, Rep. Cox (R-CA) raised concerns in the Republican Conference the other day as to whether the bill goes far enough. This has added a wrinkle to the process, but I anticipate that it will move before next Wednesday at the latest. Clinton will sign the bill.

Thereafter, the business community spends a week or so patting itself on the back, and then begins discussions on Phase 2 -- broader liability protections. If the Republicans increase their majorities in both houses of Congress, our chances improve. Let the games begin!
