Tero:

Please answer this question. If CDMA is a balkanized, isolated technology, why is Ericsson attempting to make W-CDMA the platform for its next generation wireless systems?

You continue to ignore the issue of spectral efficiency...the fact remains that the CDMA air interface supports three to four times more subscribers per unit of spectrum than TDMA-based technologies. Along this vein, we have a grand experiment playing out in the U.S. ATT Wireless is aggressively marketing its IS-136 based service, which has capacity deficit even to GSM. I have been closely tracking its financial results, paying close attention to cash costs per subscriber. For the last several quarters...as the OneRate plan rolled out...these metrics have steadily deteriorated. I would infer from this that ATT Wireless' return on capital is steadily being eroded as the company is forced to plant additional infrastructure to support its subscriber growth. In contrast, several of the large CDMA operators that I track closely, i.e. Airtouch, BellAtlantic Mobile and 360, have seen these cash costs per subscriber improve serially...despite price plans designed to match ATT. This might sound like financial analytical gobblygook...but it is a critically important point. Ignore it at your own peril.
