Strong year projected
for PC shipments

BLOOMBERG in San Francisco
Worldwide personal computer shipments will rise
13 per cent next year, led by continued strength in
Europe and the United States and a rebound in
Japan, International Data Corp (IDC) says.

Its forecast compares with 11 per cent expected
growth this year. Revenue would rise half as much
as unit shipments because of the growing popularity
of low-cost PCs, it said.

Shipments to Japan, the second-biggest market for
PCs behind the US, and to other parts of Asia had
been declining as economic troubles curtailed
technology spending, IDC said. Next year's
forecast assumed the worst was over in most of
Asia.

"We have reached the bottom in some of these
markets," IDC researcher Bruce Stephen said.

Among PC makers doing well were Dell Computer
Corp and Apple Computer - which could add as
much as one percentage point to its market share
with sales of its new iMac home computer, he said.
Apple had slightly more than 3 per cent market
share in the most recent quarter.

IBM was losing market share and Hewlett-Packard
was focusing on profitability instead of market
share, IDC said.

Next year's PC market would be driven by
continued demand for low-cost PCs, a rebound in
notebook sales as prices fell and a push to buy
computers before 2000. Growth could be stymied
by continuing economic problems or a delay in
release of the updated version of the Windows NT
operating system.
