They're non-cash charges. Nobody really cares whether they're written-off up-front or not. The Street follows operating earnings anyway, and these charges have no affect on operating results even if they're amortized. There is accounting discipline involved either way. The SEC is doing their job to be concerned, but the timing of writing-off in-process R&D doesn't matter one way or the other from an investment standpoint.
