Tero,

CDMA operators may be more profitable than GSM operators. But does that really matter if consumers ultimately prefer GSM handsets?

Good point, but what kind of preference and switching data are you referring to? Informal polling (granted not statistically significant) in New England suggests that price plans are generally considered a higher priority than handset availability in the decision making process of new consumers. (Granted, the price plans have not yet come down enough, but a 'friendly' price battle remains a possibility...)

I am curious as to why the NA GSM Alliance reject the cdma2000 harmonization effort, without giving specific technical reasons, earlier last year. Why would the NA GSM Alliance care about meddling in ETSI politics, and make such strong stance, while cdmaOne has no presence in Europe? A valid reason?

qualcomm.com

"The grievances voiced by the North American GSM Alliance on the third generation convergence issue and their opposition to the 3.6864 Mcps chip rate stem from their desire to prevent ease of transition to third generation systems for the cdmaOne operators, and thereby avoid a competitive disadvantage for GSM operators arising from their choice of GSM technology. It is certainly true that use of CDMA in second generation, either initially or following a transition, provides a competitive advantage to use of CDMA in third generation. The power of CDMA should not be weakened in an attempt to somewhat weaken these advantages."

Regards,
Greg B.
