Maybe no valid reasons... perhaps just venal reasons. If W-CDMA is not compatible with IS-95, the American GSM operators will gain a substantial advantage when W-CDMA is rolled out worldwide. They can upgrade, current American CDMA operators can't. Of course there is a possibility that Ericsson and Nokia are actually telling the truth: the efficiency of W-CDMA will really be hurt if it is forced to be compatible with IS-95, for which it was not designed in the first place.
