Hi Mat & Merry Christmas: Return on Marketing?.....

It is hard to evaluate the investment return to marketing as there are many intangable returns one receives from this investment. I guess from a fundamental point of view, this is one of the hardest things to evaluate and that is why we hire the best in the business and keep our finger's crossed.

Mr. Troop's comment..."advertising from Novell is one element in sustaining a $1.5+ billion network software business across the world market." is true but what else are they doing and are they achieving the results we need to see the stock price move higher. The jury is still out on the latter.

Also Mr Troop states..."Support for revenue growth doesn't have to be the issue...its a important factor in our relationship with channel and vendor partners". I guess I read into this that Novell still values the VAR's relationship VERY important for Novell's future going forward.

To summarize, Novell's marketing dollars spent is an intangable investment for the future and they believe that the strategy they have used in the past with the VAR's will allow them to obtain their growth for the future. This is a safe strategy but as Paul has mentioned on this thread the new Kayak 'small business' software release is also important for Novell. I believe this package release will need a more aggressive end-user marketing campaign than Mr. Troop states in his response.

Perhaps the next question we should ask Mr. Troop, is what they plan to do to 'Market' the Kayak release? Anything different? The VAR's will be slow to help with the Kayak release to small business as the overall returns are small.

Just some thoughts on your question. You have asked some very pointed questions and I observe that the 'specific' answers from to Mr. Troop our vague. I sure hope that Novell has a more detailed program for their program. It is possible that Mr. Troop is not in the complete loop on this one. Maybe we should ask him to refer us to somebody in the marketing department that might give us a more detailed summary of the proposed program.

Merry Christmas
