Bill: Not to belabor the point, but 'tar baby' definition as you first described it relates more to the definition found in the common english dictionaries, and best fits Soup's usage as such in relation to his comments to Alomex. First appeared 1924. New Oxford Dictionary of English tar baby: (noun) informal a difficult problem which is only aggravated by attempts to solve it.
