(NewsTraders) -- A group including Investor Bennett LeBow, Broke Group Ltd. (BGL) and New Valley Corp. (NVYL) revealed a 5.05% stake in Red Brick Systems (REDB) and said it may seek a merger with the company, according to an original Schedule 13D.

The group said it may propose a business combination that may involve Red Brick, New Valley's 73% owned subsidiary Thinking Machines, and other unidentified software companies.

In addition, the group said it will monitor developments at Red Brick and may hold talks with management, other shareholders and potential shareholders of the company as well as other software companies concerning a proposed merger involving Thinking Machines and Red Brick.

Bennett LeBow holds controlling stakes in Brooke Group and New Valley, and therefore holds a controlling interest in Thinking Machines.

The group revealed purchasing its ownership of 634,015 shares at prices ranging from $1.97 to $2.63 between 7/20/98 and 9/23/98 on the Nasdaq.
