Smart cards can be used in medical situations where doctors can consult the card to see a patient's medical history. These cards are called health cards. Various levels of authorization can be implemented on health cards giving medical personnel like the doctor, hospital administration and the health insurance different codes to access the patient's health card. These levels of authorization permit only the doctor to add new information; other medical personnel can only consult the card. Emergency services should be able to extract information like blood group, allergies and the address from the health card in the event that the patient is injured and unable to speak.
