Penni,

" . . . the power isn't necessarily in the prayer but in the psychological group event triggered by the activity."

At 8:00 a.m. this past Friday, nearly 1000 people congregated in a ballroom at the American Cancer Society's National Convention in Washington, D.C.. The emcee introduced a 37 year old woman who shared the very personal and inspirational story of her struggle and survival against breast and liver cancer. Once she had finished, the lights in the ballroom were dimmed, and the audience was instructed to watch the large video monitors at either side of the stage. Each person in attendance had submitted the name of a friend or loved one who had either survived or succumbed to cancer in the past year. Once one saw the name one submitted, a votive candle was lit in their honor and memory. 10 minutes later, the formerly dark room was bathed in candlelight.

When the last note of music that accompanied this Luminaria Ceremony had faded, a choir assembled on both sides of the stage -- each member holding a candle. Then, a positively angelic singer took the stage and performed "Shine" (a song I had been commissioned to write for this event.) Six minutes later the audience and I sat in stunned silence. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

There was no religion, no formal prayer in that ballroom -- there was only love, and in that love God dwelled.

"Does that make any sense at all?"

Yes ma'am, perfect sense.

Rick
