New CMOS Transceiver Offers Low-Power, High-Performance Single Chip Solution to Provide Maximum Flexibility for Design of Gigabit Network Applications

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1998-- Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (Nasdaq:AMCC - news), a leader in high-bandwidth silicon connectivity solutions, today announced the S2060, a CMOS-fabricated transmitter and receiver chip used for high-speed data transmission in Gigabit Ethernet applications.

Unprecedented in power and performance, the S2060 operates at 1.25 Gbps in conformance with the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet specification. As a SiliconHiway(TM) solution, this new single port transceiver is paving the way toward high-performance, low-power high speed data communications across LANs, MANs and WANs.

The S2060 is drop-in and pin-to-pin industry compatible with AMCC's bipolar-fabricated S2052, a dual-frequency, single chip solution for both Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications. As a result, the S2060 can be easily and cost-effectively integrated into existing solutions.

In addition to the power, and performance benefits associated with fabrication in CMOS, the S2060 provides superior jitter parameters, and a compact package outline. Requiring a single 3.3V power supply, the S2060 is ideal for use in a variety of applications including Gigabit Ethernet, serial backplanes and proprietary point-to-point links. Dissipating 600mw typical, the S2060 consumes less power than competitive solutions.

''To meet the needs of the rapidly evolving data networking market, we offer a successive line of compatible, highly-integrated products that provide our customers with an easy upgrade path,'' said Jack Basi, AMCC's director of marketing for datacom and computer products. ''This new generation S2060 transceiver exemplifies AMCC's commitment to providing highly-integrated, cost-effective solutions with the best combination of power, performance and price.''

The S2060 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver provides parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel data conversion over fiber optic, coax, or twinax interfaces as well as a 10-bit parallel TLL compatible interface.

To ensure excellent signal integrity, the transmitter and receiver each support differential LVPECL compatible interfaces. The S2060's high-speed output swing, 2.0V differential, is capable of driving signal transmission over 30m of twinax cable.

The S2060 features clock generation and recovery, whereby the on-chip transmit Phased Lock Loop (PLL) synthesizes the high-speed clock from a 125 MHz (for 1.25 Gbps rate) or 62.5 MHz (for 625 Mbps rate) reference. The on-chip receive PLL synchronizes directly to the incoming data stream to recover the clock and data.

In addition, the S2060 performs framing for block encoded data and continuous downstream clocking from the receiver. The S2060 features local loopback mode for system diagnostics, and meets jitter generation of less than 192 ps and jitter tolerance of greater than 599 ps as specified by the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet specification.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the S2060 are available now with production release scheduled for December, 1998. The S2060 is offered in compact 64-pin PQFP [10 x 10] mm and [14 x 14] mm packages, and is priced at $11 in quantities of 100.
