A more direct conjecture is that Merrill is a prime bailer of LTCM if I am not mistaken ($300 million USD contribution; most bailers were at $300MM mark, and two or three contributed $100MM). The firm would likely be aware if LTCM is truly short the rumored 100 tons of gold and that LTCM will soon cover its gold shorts. A bullish statement on gold could mean just that, maybe more.
