High Tech Happy Hour proves to be both By Tom Vaughn American-Statesman Staff Posted: Sept. 30, 1998 On one side it's a swingin' show with The Naughty Ones, complete with shadowed Go-Go dancer, and on the other it's a high-tech job fair with about a dozen of Austin's high-tech leaders. The first-ever High Tech Happy Hour, sponsored by radio stations KROX and KGSR, created an almost perfect combination: beer, quesadillas and jobs. While applicants weren't carrying their beers with them around to the company booths, the unique event created a fun atmosphere compared to the nomrally stale bright lights and cubicles of the larger career fairs. The need for such events, as evident by the some 300 people at Tuesday's has grown as Austin's high-tech job market has seen massive growth in the past few years with large companies like Dell Computer Corp. and IBM opening more and more plants in the area as well as smaller start-ups like Tivoli and Pervasive Software making a successful go in the software industry. "If we're in the middle of an explosion, then we're going to go nuclear pretty soon," said Pat Solitro, who was recruiting for Pervasive. "Austin really is on a feverish pace for emerging markets and emerging technologies." Vicki Funston helps herself to some free quesadillas and chips and queso.
