Yeadon, I don't think it'll go much if any lower. Also don't expect telecoms to be out of favor long. Lucent already reported they don't forsee any problems hitting their numbers. LU, NT and others seem to close off their lows hit mid-day, though ALA was not so lucky.

I suspect part of this companies problem is a lack of understanding...

Alcatel was established in 1898 as a publically-owned electric company. It was nationalized by the French Government in 1982 and then privatized in 1987. Alcatel has four principal product lines; telecommunications, which accounted for 44.3% of the company's 1997 sales; cables and related components, which accounted for 22.8% of the company's 1997 sales; energy and transport, which accounted for 18.4% of the company's 1997 sales; and engineering and systems, which accounted for 14.1% of the company's 1997 sales.
